ENGL 251: Exploring Urban Spaces

This guide will help you locate historical resources for the research assignments in your class.

Searching the Library Catalog

Remember, when searching the library catalog you need to use broad search terms. Don't get too narrow in your search or you may miss relevant material.

If you are doing research on Sioux City, there are some samples of materials we have available to the left. You can find additional resources by searching "Sioux City" or "Sioux City history" in the catalog.

You can also try searching for specific individuals, if applicable.

If you want to see what is available to check out, make sure you search the Main Collection.

You can also search our Archival materials, but you will need to speak to a library staff member in order to access these. We do not allow these materials to be checked out.

While some of this information is specific to Morningside College, we do have access to all of the issues of the Collegian Reporter online. The Collegian Report is the student newspaper of Morningside College. More than 100 years of the print publication are available online through the link above.

While it is a student newspaper, it does provide some coverage of the Sioux City community. It may also talk about people that have ties both to the campus community and to the larger community of Sioux City.

If you need help searching the digital Collegian Reporter, please contact a librarian.

Other Sioux City Information Sources

The Sioux City Public Library will be a great resource if you choose to research Sioux City. The Public Library has a larger collection of books and other materials on the history of Sioux City.

You do have borrowing privileges at the Sioux City Public Library (along with WITT and Briar Cliff) with your Morningside College ID.

Keep in mind that some of the materials may be non-circulating. You can search their catalog on their website (linked above).

The Sioux City Journal would be a great source, too. You can access back issues of this newspaper through the Sioux City Public Library.

You may have luck at the Sioux City Public Museum as well. The Research Center hours are Wednesday - Friday, from 1:00 to 5:00 pm. Appointments are appreciated and can be made by contacting the museum.
