CSE (Council of Science Editors) Style Guide: Name-Year System

This guide will help you cite sources according to CSE Scientific Style.

Guidelines

Citations in the name-year format are referred to in the body of the paper using the in-text style.  The in-text style for citations includes the author’s name and the year of publication within parentheses and the citations are listed alphabetically by the author’s surname in the end references page.

Citing Articles

Article from a Print Journal

Format: Author's(s') name(s). Date. Article Title. Abbreviated journal title. Volume(issue):page numbers.

Example: Kesselheim AS, Solomon DH. 2010 Jun 3. Incentives for drug development: the curious case of colchicine. N Engl J Med. 362(22):2045-2047.
 

Electronic Article from a Database

Format: Author's(s') name(s). Date. Article Title. Abbreviated journal title [Internet]. [cited date]; volume(issue): page numbers. Available from: web address (include the DOI number, article or document number, if available)

Technical Report

Author(s) name.  Date.  Title of report.  Edition.  Place of publication:  Publisher. Report No.:  Notes.

Conference Paper

CD-Rom

Example:  

Interactive physiology:  cardiovascular system [CD-Rom].  2000.  Version 2.0. Atlanta (GA):  A.D.A.M. **Note: When there is no author available for a work, the date of publication comes after the title in the name-year system.

DVD
