ENGL 241: Classical Mythology

This guide will help you locate physical and digital resources on classical mythology.

Finding Adaptations

It can be difficult to find adaptations of classical myths; however, you just have to get creative! Listed below are some tips & tricks to finding adaptations.

  1. Use Google and Wikipedia

So often you are told to stay away from these resources, but they really are great for helping you locate adaptations! Go to Google and search for the "modern adaptations of Homer's Iliad" or "film adaptations of Homer's Odyssey." Many websites list such adaptations.

Wikipedia also has entries dedicated to adaptations of classical works. These pages list adaptations by format or time period.

  1. Search by character names or events

Have a topic in mind? Interested in a particular hero or goddess? Try focusing your search to just that topic! Search "Ulysses in film," "Circe adaptations," or even "fiction on the Trojan War." Being more focused can help you locate these resources faster.

  1. Consider themes of classical mythology

What other works do you know of that treat heroism the same as the classical mythology you talked about in class? Or what about fate, sacrifice, justice, or even the struggle between good and evil? While reading the myths, are you remembering other works you have previously read due to parallels between the stories?

  1. Consider other formats

Have you thought beyond books and novels to film? What about children's literature or graphic novels? How do these formats affect the adaptation? Are there benefits/drawbacks?

  1. Utilize your resources

The best resource available to you? Your librarians. Contact a librarian if you need further assistance locating adaptations. And remember that if we don't have something you want, we can use interlibrary loan to get it for you!

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service that allows you to check out materials that are unavailable in our library from libraries around the US. It is available to all Morningside students (including distant education graduate students), faculty, and staff.  ILL can be used for both physical and digital materials.

To find a book or other physical resource outside our library, it is easiest to use our Discovery Search. Once you find a resource you want, click on the record. There will be a maroon button labeled "Request Item Through Interlibrary Loan." Click this button and fill in your contact information to make an ILL request.

You can also use the ILL Submission Form. Make sure to put as much information as possible. This makes it easier for us to find the correct item for you.

Physical resources may take 7 to 10 days or longer to receive once you put in a request. Please keep this in mind when beginning your research. You will receive an email when your item(s) are available to be picked up at the library.

Digital materials often only take a few days to receive. These resources will be emailed to you.

If you have any questions about ILL, please do not hesitate to ask a librarian.
